Mice are natural predators to silk worms so the cats were there to keep the mice population low over time the locals grew an affection, so much after one cat was accidentally killed by falling debris they made a shrine and buried the cat there it's now the center shrine between the two villages since then many more shrines and monuments have been erected

I dunno if we should start calling this the island of photographers than Cat Island, cause there’s crazy cat people everywhere with cameras, and not your run of the mill cameras either they’ve got the entire professional lens kit going with straps and carry bags with tripods. If that wasn't crazy cat enough for you, you can stay the week in a the cat hotel which appears to be a bunch of tiny motels that look like cats

The local population never taken into account how fast cats breed, they breed like rabbits and in no time were slowly taking over the island meanwhile the native population was dwindling to a mere 100 but the cats were booming, at the moment they easily outnumber the inhabitants, In Japanese culture the cat is considered Good Luck. Tashirojima has also recently survive that devastating Tsunami, alot of seaside fisheries were affected but they seen some good fortune as they believe in Japanese culture that cats are a good luck charm so they believe without them things may have turned out much worse
