 The Bjargtangar part of Látrabjarg is often called the westernmost point if you skip the mid-Atlantic archipelago of Azores. Látrabjarg is over 440 meters high and 14 km long. Látrabjarg is the most westerly point and is also one of the most westerly points in the whole of Europe.

The cliffs stretch for over 10 kilometres and in places reach a staggering and vertigo inducing 440metres.

Even on a mild summers day the winds howl, getting out of the car is difficult and spending time safely on the cliffs is an exercise in endurance. The Westfjords of Iceland is the largest seabird cliff in Iceland and one of Europe's biggest seabird cliffs.

 Puffins, kittiwakes and fulmars squeeze into every crevice and inch of space during the breeding season as well as arctic terns, razorbills, guillemots and many more. Látrabjarg is considered to be one of the most spectacular seabird cliffs in the world and the birdlife here is amazing.

 

Navigating the narrow winding gravel mountain roads from Hjnótur.  Preventing erosion is essential to preserve this fragile environment.

Razorbill (approx. 161,000 couples), fulmar, a lot of guillemots (approx. 226,00 couples), kittiwakes, colours within the cliffs are stunning with bands of red and gold as well as dark greens and white from lichen and guano. Many, many other species of sea-birds - approx. 10 all in all - nesting and raising their chicks in the cliffs.

Gulls perched on the cliffs of this beautiful scenery in the most Western North part of Iceland at the very edge of Iceland facing out to Greenland and Canada, the gulls likely rest here after long trips to locations just as mentioned so they get a little cranky if disturbed. They are also protecting their young so they will attack you if they detect an intruder closeby, in some countries they are known to cull gulls just due to the sheer aggressiveness of them, so there’s easily a few thousand of them perched on these rocks below so approach with caution
