Alcatraz Isolation Cells D Block 2015 VR Alcatraz Island

"D" Block "dark cell" entrance at Alcatraz Prison, used for solitary confinement, known as the Special Treatment Unit (S.T.U.). Known by inmates as Sunset Strip.
4 of the 42 cells in block D are said to be haunted, 14-D is permeated by a perpetual chill.

D-Block was the most feared by inmates. It includes isolation cells in which inmates were placed as a punishment for bad behavior, such as attempting to escape or engaging in a brawl. Known as “the hole”, each isolation cell was cold, damp and devoid of light.

The D block housed 36 segregation cells, and 6 solitary confinement cells - the isolation and punishment cells. The library was also located in Block D beyond the top door.

These dingy cells had a sink, a toilet and a solid steel door with a small opening to push food through. There was no human contact whatsoever, no form of reading was allowed - all there was was boredom. Prisoners were given a mattress to sleep on at night but this was removed during the day. Prisoners could be kept in the "Hole" for up to 19 days.

One inmate, Rufe McCain, was confined here for over three years after an escape attempt. Shortly after being released from the hole, he stabbed another inmate to death, and was acquitted on the ground that cell 14-D had done irreparable damage to his psyche.
Cell Block D was the most notorious of al the blocks in Alcatraz Prison. It was referred to as the special treatment unit, where prisoners were either segregated or placed in isolation and solitary confinement.

The library was also located in Block D, The corridor between C Block and the library was called Park Avenue, beyond the end door is indeed the library, there was many ways to access the library, D Block was seen as the quiet block as a library is also heard of.
