In 2003 and 2004, efforts were focused upon planning the world’s foremost auto Museum.

The museum is adjacent to the Tacoma Dome and opened on June 2, 2012.
The Building Committee, architects and other consultants designed an iconic facility and created an economically viable operating plan.

Many of the cars on display were donated to the museum by the family of Harold LeMay.
The design was officially unveiled in August 2004 to a group of city officials, Board and Steering Committee members, media and other friends to enthusiastic response.

After his death, the city of Tacoma donated 10 acres (4.0 ha) of land next to the Tacoma Dome for the museum that would contain some of his car collection.

The majority of the collection remains at the LeMay Family Collection at Marymount in nearby Spanaway.
This occasion marked the beginning of “The Drive for AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM” with Nancy LeMay’s initial pledge of $15,000,000 to jump start the effort.

The museum has 165,000 square feet (1.53 ha) of exhibit space, and contains a 350-car gallery showing cars notable for their speed, technology and design, as well as their importance to car culture.

Outside the museum is a 3-acre (1.2 ha) courtyard and clubhouse for car clubs.
Construction of the LeMay – America’s Car Museum, 165,000 square foot showcase facility, was completed in Tacoma in the fall of 2011 and a celebratory Grand Opening was held in June of 2012, drawing more than 10,000 persons Opening Weekend.
