We all know alot of bad historic things about Edinburgh Castle this is why it has it’s own section on Funnystash as we already have a section of Scottish castles here click here to go there mixed into volumes that we highly recommend you see but Edinburgh is the real Rockstar of castles and deserves it’s own section. Let’s look at some more recent inspired events in the media before we delve.

.

The Game of Thrones Red Wedding story was inspired by an event that taken place in the castle at 1440 where the children of the Douglas clan were butchered and beheaded after being promised safe passage by the young king resembling that of Westeros which is another Scottish castle just west of Edinburgh. The banquet seemed innocent and honest enough of the promise of safety and honor until they lifted the covered plate with the background of a drum beating and was a severed bulls head which meant death. They were led into a mock court and the mock trial began where the young Douglas clan children would be butchered, beheaded and spiked for all the Douglas clan to see.

Archaeological investigation has yet to establish when the Castle Rock was first used as a place of human habitation. There is no record of any Roman interest in the location during General Agricola's invasion of northern Britain near the end of the 1st century AD. Ptolemy's map of the 2nd century AD shows a settlement in the territory of the Votadini named "Alauna", meaning "rock place", making this possibly the earliest known name for the Castle Rock.

Occupied by humans since at least the Iron Age

The writer of Game Of Thrones famously said, a couple of real events were from Scottish history and no matter how much stuff i make up there's stuff in history that's worse. Edinburgh is also considered the most haunted city in the world, One famous story i knew and grew up with as a kid about Edinburgh castle was how they bricked innocent victims of the Plague disease below the castle walls for merely suspecting them of having the contagion, you can still see scratch marks where people were clawing at the stone

1286, on the death of King Alexander III, the throne of Scotland became vacant. Edward I of England was appointed to adjudicate the competing claims for the Scottish crown, but used the opportunity to attempt to establish himself as the feudal overlord of Scotland. During the negotiations, Edward stayed briefly at Edinburgh Castle and may have received homage there from the Scottish nobles.

It appears the more you know about Edinburgh castle the less you want to know, because the real stories aren’t exactly shared with tourists unless they’re looking for it in fear it may scare tourists away from visiting, but luckily many tourists come for just that, it’s a peaceful touristy safe place now but back 7 centuries ago were families (clans) who would run the surrounding Edinburgh castle with an Iron fist killing everyone and anyone who would dare oppose them

Lang siege James IV was killed in battle at Flodden Field, on 9 September 1513 retreat was to the castle for what was to be a 100 year war with renowned offspring such as Mary Queen of Scots

In March 1296, Edward I launched an invasion of Scotland, unleashing the First War of Scottish Independence. Edinburgh Castle soon came under English control, surrendering after a three days long bombardment. Following the siege, Edward had many of the Scottish legal records and royal treasures moved from the castle to England.

This would also send a message that those who dare challenge or rise up against the young king would have a fate worse than death despite best efforts and murders that would follow by the King and Crown the Douglas clan would still come to dominate the Scottish courts, making sure that any high positions would be family members and supporters, the Douglas clan would take full control of governing Scotland for themselves but in 1449 King James would take the role governing Scotland and spend the best part of his life trying to break up the Douglas clan in bloody murders. They were right to perceive the Douglas clan as a threat as they would hold a stranglehold over Scotland's courts much to the anger of the King, the famous poet Sir Walter Scott would later write a poem about this
