Oldest Pub in Scotland has The Burgh's Coat of arms features a black bi itch chained to an oak tree on an island, and those born within the town are known as "black bi itches". In his account of a tour of Scotland, published in 1679, an English gentleman, Thomas Kirk, described the arms of the town as "a black bi itch tied to a tree, in a floating island. "We enquired for a story about it, but could meet with none"
Linlithgow Loch where the condemned were killed was a stone's throw away from this pub the almost hidden away backdrop of this area is rather breathtakingly beautiful with natural beauty mixed with Mediaeval relic beauty. To show the pub solely would really be a dis-service to Scotland's oldest pub haunts.
Linlithgow, in Erst (Gaelic), is thus explained. Lin signifies Lough, Lith, black, and Gow, a hound."

Judging an area by your first impression is an extremity ignorant errand, especially when we’re talking about one of the oldest medieval towns in Scotland becomes especially ignorant as words had different meanings in our past, a bundle of sticks used to be called a burden of sticks and changed over the centuries to mean the most offensive word we have today in our current language but was once innocently used as describing a burden. I’ll allow you to look up the medieval meaning for a “Bundle of Sticks” yourself.
This town falls into similar peril as even using the term Black Bi itch could indeed even penalise me on algorithms as a hateful place if too many instances of foul language is used on my .com throws me into the bundle of sticks category forever to be tarred and feathered like some ancient town but the modern digital equivalence.
The name of the town's medieval 15th Century mascot is under threat by modern day Authority puritans including the brewery commission giving them problems for such a name.

The name comes from a man sentenced to starve to death on an island on the closeby park Loch, friends and wellwishers would send the dog with food and water to help the condemned man. Once authorities found out about the plan the dog was tied to an oak tree on the island and sentenced to the same fate as his owner. This is where the origin name comes from, the loch and its island can still be toured when the tide is low and as of 2020 a beautiful statue was approved nearby the loch to honour the dog who was sentenced to death by The Authorities.

The first murder using a firearm in Scotland and high profile Political Assassination with firearms took place in the High Street of the town on 23 January 1570 when James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray was assassinated by James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, a supporter of Queen Mary. As Moray was passing in a cavalcade in the main street below, Hamilton fatally wounded him with a carbine shot from a window of his uncle Archbishop Hamilton's house.
Linlithgow Palace remains the chief historic attraction of the town. The present palace was started (on an older site) in 1424 by James I of Scotland. It was attacked by Oliver Cromwell in 1650 and later burnt in 1746, and, whilst unroofed, it is still largely completely described as Scotland's finest surviving late medieval secular building.
The entire Palace and it’s courtyards feed into the Town Square and highstreets pictured above complete with Scotland’s oldest surviving pub at the time having a regular sounding name has controversial opponents today including the brewery authorities themselves opposed to the name. Public Executions around this Loch would have been a popular attraction, as in most high profiled towns of the past. Executions were actually forms of entertainment, audiences would sometimes even perhaps regularly turn against the executioner if they executed any people of nobility dishonourably. Scotland was a hotbed of hotly contested opinions so nobility persecution violence would have certainly been the norm even by medieval it was high here by standards, Queens weren’t exempt from execution mobs as Queen of Scots purposely botched execution demonstrated
