Pompei had these crossings built with a proprietary wheel width: visitors and merchants from elsewhere generally couldn’t bring their own carts or carriages into town because those wouldn’t fit through the slots in these crossings.

Instead they had to rent a cart or carriage at the city entrance, one with a special wheel spacing that could fit through these crossings.

 

 

The city became an important passage for goods that arrived by sea and had to be sent toward Rome or Southern Italy along the nearby Appian Way.
