All this positive race news was marred by tragedy. Four riders died due to accidents on the 37.73-mile Mountain Course. This was the deadliest year since the 2000 IOM TT.

First, Tyco BMW’s Ian Hutchinson was the rider to catch. He was quick throughout practice - qualifying, but couldn’t match Dunlop’s speed in both the RST Superbike and Senior TT.

During qualifying on Saturday, June 4, Paul Shoesmith, 50, crashed during Superstock practice, and Dwight Beare, 27, during the opening Sidecar race. On Saturday, Ian Bell crashed during the Sidecar 2 race, and Andrew Soar, 32, during the Senior TT. All four died due to injuries sustained in those wrecks.

Peter Hickman was ruled out of a potential podium in Friday’s 2016 Senior TT when an electrical problem struck his JG Speedfit Kawasaki.

From the first practice on, the BMW S1000RR topped every Superbike/Superstock session.

Dunlop earned both of those IOMTT wins, setting new records. In the opening race of 2016, the RST Superbike TT, the Northern Irishman became the first rider in history to post a record lap under 17 minutes.

Isle of Man TT bosses have clarified the situation which caused Ian Hutchinson to blast Michael Dunlop during the press conference after yesterday’s Senior TT. Hutchinson hit out at his BMW rival for allegedly accusing him of cheating in Wednesday’s second Supersport race.

Dunlop was under the impression the pistons in Hutchinson’s R6 Supersport bike were illegal and TT bosses had confirmed such questions came from a query made as the bike underwent its standard pre-race scrutineering.

He also posted a best outright lap of 133.393mph - destroying the previous record set in the 2015 Senior TT by 23-time TT winner John McGuinness (132.701mph, Honda).

But Dunlop was not finished, he would also earn win at the closing race, the Senior TT. En route to claiming his 13th career TT, the 27-year old also set another outright lap record – a 133.962mph.

This Belfast man recorded no less than four 133mph+ laps, two in the Superbike and two in the Senior, almost lapping at 134mph in the latter as the Mountain Course narrowly missed out on becoming the fastest road race circuit in the world currently in use.

The records only stood for two years though as Harrison and Hickman took racing around the 37.73-mile circuit to heights never seen before in 2018.

Ian Hutchinson also lapped at more than 133mph and whilst Dunlop set three out of the six best-ever sector times, Hutchinson took two of them and in the Superstock class too as opposed to the Superbike class.
